Abstract
This narrative review aims to synthesize existing research to elucidate how sleep disturbances impact metabolic health, specifically focusing on lipid metabolism and related disorders. With the rising global prevalence of conditions such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases, understanding the role of sleep patterns, including duration and quality, has garnered significant attention. Current findings indicate a complex interplay between sleep patterns and lipid profiles, suggesting that both short and long sleep durations may contribute to dyslipidemia. Furthermore, intermittent hypoxia, particularly in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea, can lead to lipid abnormalities through mechanisms involving inflammation and hormonal changes. Sleep disorders may also alter the secretion of key metabolic hormones, impacting energy balance and increasing the risk of insulin resistance. Although methodological heterogeneity and variability in diagnostic tools complicate direct comparisons across studies, this review underscores the urgent need for future longitudinal and interventional research. Establishing standardized outcome measures and targeted strategies to improve sleep quality can serve as a critical resource for healthcare professionals aiming to mitigate risks associated with metabolic syndrome and enhance patient health outcomes.
