Abstract
In the high-stakes domain of healthcare administration, the prevalence of sleep disorders among staff and leadership represents a critical, yet frequently overlooked, occupational challenge. While clinical decisions directly impact patient outcomes, the underlying health of the decision-makers is often compromised by inadequate sleep. This paper examines the systemic implications of sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome, within healthcare environments. With studies indicating that over one-third of healthcare professionals suffer from sleep disturbances, the issue transcends individual well-being to become a major organizational liability.Healthcare roles characterized by shift work, extended hours, and high-stress environments exacerbate sleep deprivation, leading to significant cognitive impairment. Such deficits adversely affect attention, complex problem-solving, and critical decision-making abilities. In medical settings, these cognitive lapses are not merely operational hurdles; they are direct precursors to medical errors, compromised patient safety, and poor clinical outcomes. Furthermore, the resulting decrease in productivity and increase in organizational financial risk underscore the need for structural change. We argue that addressing sleep health is a strategic imperative. Organizations must prioritize evidence-based interventions to improve employee sleep hygiene, thereby enhancing institutional productivity, mitigating financial liabilities, and ensuring a safer, more resilient healthcare workforce.
